Take Action: Urge Legislators to Support TANF in the Final Budget

We did our work. And we did it well. This session, we have been fighting hard to Save the Safety Net for families across Washington state. As a result of your hard work, Senator Ed Murray’s original Senate budget proposal responded to our demands by preventing further cuts to TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). In fact, this budget proposal actually restored previous cuts to the cash grant and to childcare eligibility.

Then unexpectedly on March 2nd, the Senate floor was hijacked by a group of conservative legislators, who passed a shameful budget that makes drastic cuts to vital safety net programs. The budget passed by the Senate made a $202 million dollar cut to TANF – this is by far the largest cut to any one program. In making this cut, the Senate turned its back on our state’s low-income families. This budget will make it more difficult, if not impossible, for many people across the state to put food on their tables, pay their rent and provide for their families.

But we will not let the 2012 Legislative Session end this way. The House has held to their commitment to low-income communities and has refused to accept the Senate’s approach to the budget.

Now, the Governor called a special session – which started on Monday, March 12 – in order to reconcile the two budgets and pass a final state budget. In the next few weeks, the Governor will work with Republican and Democratic leadership in the House and Senate to reach a compromise.

As our lawmakers are in the process of compromising, we need to send a strong message to them that balancing the budget on the backs of low-income families can not and will not stand! We must urge our lawmakers to continue to stand in solidarity with us and fund TANF in the final budget. Lawmakers need to hear from you now!
