Call Your PA Senator MARCH 5th to Oppose Voter Suppression Bill

A citizen's right to vote lies at the very foundation of American democracy, yet our State Senate is poised to vote on legislation that will disenfranchise thousands of Pennsylvania voters. House Bill 934, the unnecessary voter photo ID bill, is on the move in the PA State Senate.   The State Senate is returning to session on March 5th and will vote on this bill in the Appropriations Committee.   We need your help to get the phones ringing!

On the one year anniversary that House Bill 934 was introduced, we urge you to call your State Senator's Capitol office on MARCH 5th, 2012. Insist that he or she oppose House Bill 934 as an unnecessary, expensive, and un-democratic obstacle to voting rights. Urge them to vote "NO" when House Bill 934 comes up for a vote. You can find your Senator's name and State Capitol office number by entering your address below, and you will also find suggested information to share with your Senator and his/her staff.

The Voter Suppression Bill (House Bill 934), which was passed by the State House last summer, would deprive voters of the right to cast a ballot if they do not show a valid state-issued photo ID card, with limited exceptions. This will particularly affect non-drivers (senior citizens who no longer drive, persons with disabilities, and residents of urban communities who travel by public transit), and the challenge of securing a non-driver photo ID card from PennDOT will be costly, difficult, and, for some, impossible.  Supporters of the bill have been unable to show any evidence of voter identity fraud in Pennsylvania because safeguards against fraudulent voting are already in place in our state.  Worse yet, the legislation will cost Pennsylvania taxpayers millions to implement.  Long lines at polling places are likely to form, leading other voters to simply give up and go home.
