OneAmerica's Luis Fraga Joins Obama's Educational Commission for Hispanics
May 31, 2011
President Obama appointed OneAmerica board president and UW professor Luis Ricardo Fraga to the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics last week. This commission will develop a set of action proposals to give to the White House and the Secretary of Education a policy agenda to improve the educational attainment of Latino students.
“This commission will prioritize efforts to improve Latino access to education at all levels including high school completion, college access and retention, and adult education,” said Fraga. “We do not plan to write yet another report on causes and problems that will sit on shelves untouched. All of the commissioners will work to develop strategies that are innovative, viable, and salient to Latino communities and the entire country.”
Fraga is currently President of OneAmerica's Board of Directors and Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement, Russell F. Stark University Professor, Director of the Diversity Research Institute, and Professor of Political Science at the University of Washington. For more about Fraga, see last week’s White House press release.
“OneAmerica is honored to have our Board President advising President Obama at the same time that he helps provide programmatic direction for OneAmerica’s next decade of growth,” says OneAmerica Executive Director Pramila Jayapal. “His appointment only strengthens our ability to do work on critical education issues affecting Latinos in Washington State.”
OneAmerica’s most recent education projects include tomorrow’s launch of an innovative adult English Language Learning (ELL) project that merges technology with new models for learning English in order to meet increasing demand. Another involves organizing immigrant communities statewide to help shape an ELL policy agenda for Washington State that reduces the gaping disparity in academic performance of ELL students in the education system.
OneAmerica, formerly Hate Free Zone, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that advances the fundamental principles of democracy and justice by building power within immigrant communities.
