Janet is a U.S. citizen and youth leader who lives in fear. Her father was deported three years ago when she started high school and now she fears the same may happen to her mother.
Ariel, who recently graduated from Whitman College with a 3.85 GPA and a Sociology Degree, dreams of one day becoming a U.S. citizen and contributing even more to the community he grew up in and loves.
Both have so much to offer, yet continue to suffer under deportation policies that tear apart families.
Over 900 Washington residents joined OneAmerica and Congressman Luis Gutierrez for a Seattle rally on June 26 to send a clear message to President Obama: provide relief to our families who have deep ties to the United States. After all, Obama has the power under existing law to pass administrative reforms that would stop the deportations of the families of U.S. citizens and young people who should have been legalized via the DREAM Act.
We created this video for you. Watch it and you'll see why Congressman Gutierrez is a strong, national leader for our community. Also learn more about Janet and Ariel and witness the energy of a movement that will keep fighting for justice for our families, for our communities.
Gutierrez' visit was part of OneAmerica's Democracy Summer, a series of coordinated events all summer long focused on reclaiming our communities. We're increasing pressure on Obama over his deportation policies, working to stop ICE's devastating "Secure Communities" program across Washington State, and helping redraw voting maps so that immigrant communities and communities of color can achieve meaningful political representation. Join us!
