United for Fair Representation
Members of the WA Redistricting Commission,
We seek fair and accountable political representation of communities of color through the 2011 redistricting process. With 27% of WA residents self-identifying as a person of color, and in greater concentrations in King County (35%), Pierce County (30%) and Yakima county (52%); our elected representatives should reflect the diversity of our state.
We urge you to create:
1) A new 10th congressional district in south King County that includes a majority of people of color;
2) A congressional district that includes Yakima and Tri-Cities;
3) Three legislative districts in King County that include a majority of people of color;
4) A legislative district in Pierce County that includes a majority of people of color; and
5) A legislative district in Yakima County that includes a majority of people of color.
The creation of these districts will have positive, long-lasting impacts for all WA residents by increasing the civic engagement and participation of underrepresented communities in the democratic process.
