"Media literacy is the ability to sift through and analyze the messages that inform, entertain and sell to us every day."- Deirdre Downs
When Hugh and Deirdre Downs founded Media Literacy Project 20 years ago, they realized that media does not exist in a vacuum. In fact, media impacts our value system, our self-esteem and our lives. On a daily basis, we are bombarded with messages aimed to influence every decision we make, small and large.
For the past 20 years, Media Literacy Project has empowered communities to make a different decision. By equipping students and teachers with the curricula, tools and programs to access and analyze media; they can make choices that foster a healthy media environment. By teaching communities to create media, they can create better choices for themselves. Media that better represent their culture and connect them to one another.
For 20 years, Media Literacy Project has worked towards the vision of media that keeps people healthy, happy and heard; media that is a vehicle to economic equity and development, rather than economic stratification. Media that makes our daughters and sons feel inspired and industrious, rather than inadequate. We love media and for the past 20 years we’ve loved making media work towards the betterment of our communities.
With your help, we can make media better for 20 more.
